2016 Wimbledon Ladies Part 1: Tumbling seeds

Right!  Well its time for my first post on this year's Wimbledon championship, which is considered the most prestigous tournament in the game of tennis. So as the first week is over let's take a look out how the first week went on the ladies event....

OK so to kick off we have had quite a few upsets so far starting with the biggest one which was the reigning French open champion, Garbine Muguruza, who looked likely to go on a deep run again at SW19 having reached the final there last year.  However Garbine suffered a shock defeat to one of the giant killing players on the ladies tour, Jana Cepelova in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.  Petra Kvitova the former two time champion also suffered an early exit in the 2nd round as she has been struggling with her form so far this year and she continued to as she went out to Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets 7-6, 7-5.

Home GB favourite, Johanna Konta also went out early aswell in the 2nd round to the former ladies finalist, Eugene Bouchard as the two of them fought it out in a three set match that saw Konta lose and the Canadian win 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.  Karolina Pliskova who despite having had a good run on the grass courts leading up to Wimbledon also suffered an early defeat to Misaki Doi of Japan in straight sets 7-6, 6-3.  Roberta Vinci, the 6th seed went out too today against the American player, Coco Vandeweghe in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.  Sam Stosur, the 2011 US Open champion has never faired so well on grass and this time she didn't either as she also lost out to grass court specialist, Sabine Lisicki in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

And last of all regarding the few British female players, Laura Robson who has been struggling with injury in recent years also went out in the 1st round to the Australian open champion, Angelique Keber, 6-2, 6-2.  Heather Watson had a much tougher match however before she lost to her German opponent, Annika Beck, 6-3, 0-6, 12-10 in a match that was delayed by the rain and was player over two days where Heather appeared to have her chances but she came up short in the final set.  And last of all and the last female Brit player standing, Tara Moore valiantly fought against Svetlana Kuznetsova as she pushed the Russian the distance but she lost out to her with Kuznetsova winning 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

As for the remaining top seeds, Serena Williams has so far made it into the 3rd round where she will play Annika Beck but she had a tough time getting there as she battled hard against her fellow American, Christina McHale in the 2nd round before she prevailed in three sets 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.  Venus Williams also had to duke it out against her Russian opponent, Daria Kasatkina as she was pushed hard into a decider, which was also delayed by rain and saw her eventually win 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.  Agnieszka Radwanska, the finalist from 2012 also had a very tough match in her 2nd round match against the qualifier, Ana Konjuh of Croatia, who even was serving for the match in the 3rd set before she started cramping and this let Radwanska back in and play went deep on until broke to win the match in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 9-7.

As for some other top seeds that have progressed, Angelique Kerber has managed to make fairly straight forward progress through her rounds so far despite a tight-ish 3rd round match against her German fellow opponent, Carian Witthoft, which saw Kerber pushed hard in the first set breaker but she sealed it easily in the 2nd set, 7-6, 6-1.  Madison Keys who is considered a favourite for the title by some (well outside Serena of course) has progressed too but she had to fight her way past the French woman, Alize Cornet to reach the 4th round having beaten her in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.  And last of all Simona Halep, has made very good progress so far in the tournament having reached the 4th round without dropping a set as she beat Kiki Bertens in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the 3rd round.

So this concludes my round up for now and there are still 3rd round matches to be played at the time of typing this as for the first time in 12 years, there will be play on the middle Sunday of the tournament due to the rain delays last week and I will do a further update on the ladies match soon.

So next up is the men's and I will be back soon with that....

See you in a bit!
